Welcome! We are so happy you are seeking the Sacrament of Baptism for your child. Please review St. Peter Catholic Church's Baptism Requirements and Godparent/Sponsor requirements that are below. If you are an active registered parishioner at St. Peter Church for at least three months and would like to schedule a baptism, please complete and submit the baptism registration form:
Baptisms may be scheduled after the Baptism Registration Form is submitted. Parents who have not taken a baptism preparation class within the last three years are required to attend a baptism preparation class. You will receive the link to sign up for a baptism preparation class after Faith Formation receives and processes your Baptism Registration Form.
Baptism Requirements:
At least one parent must be an active, registered parishioner at St Peter for at least three months prior to beginning the Baptism process
Being an active parishioner means that you participate in spiritual growth opportunities at St Peter parish, attend Mass regularly, and contribute financially to support our parish mission. (Can. 857.2)
Complete the informationneeded for baptism form.
Attend the Baptism Preparation Class if you have not taken a class in the last three years. (Can. 851.2)
Baptisms may be scheduled after the Baptism Information Form is submitted and you’ve signed up for the Baptism Preparation Class, if required for your family.
Donationsto support the baptism process are accepted, but not required. They support parish faith formation programs.
As you discern your choice of your child’s godparents, please consider the required qualifications below.
Note: A completed Godparent/Sponsor: If the godparents are not registered members of St Peter we will needed a godparent form signed and sealed from at least one of the godparents home Catholic parish.
Godparent Requirements: A godparent's responsibility is not only to be present at the celebration of their godchild’s baptism, but also to assume, through word and example, a lifelong responsibility to help their godchild lead a Christian life in harmony with the baptism they have received. This lifelong responsibility includes leading their godchild to a life of prayer, to knowledge of their faith, to loving service to others, and to reception of Eucharist and Confirmation. (Can.872)
There is to be only one male sponsor or one female sponsor or one of each. (Can 873) Thus, only one godparent is required. If there are two godparents, one must be male and the other female. More than two are not permitted.
A godparent must be at least 16 years old; must be fully initiated through Confirmation and Eucharist and must lead a life of faith in keeping with the function to be taken on; may not be the father or mother of the child to be baptized. (Con.874.1)
If married, the godparent must be married in the Catholic Church or have had their marriage blessed by the Catholic Church.
A baptized person who belongs to a non-Catholic ecclesial community is not to participate except together with a Catholic sponsor and then only as a witness of the baptism. (Can.874.2)
