We all know small parts of the story of King David, the most admired and revered king of ancient Israel. David the shepherd; David and Goliath; David and Bathsheba.
But his story, told in 1 & 2 Samuel of the Old Testament, contains so much more: suspense, drama, love and betrayal, sin and forgiveness, intra-family rivalries, youthful bravado and old age. David did not become king easily, nor was his kingship exemplary, but he became the model for Jews and Christians. The Messiah is promised to be the son of David.
As in prior years, we will use a guide for our reading, a short book that includes the main source for David’s story, 1 & 2 Samuel, along with explanation and commentary: Feidhlimidh T. Magennis, First and Second Samuel (Collegeville: Liturgical Press, 2012), available in paperback and eBook. This book is not required, as the main emphasis is our reading and discussion of Scripture itself. But the book will be helpful.
