Examen Prayer Explores the Daily Examen, a technique of prayerful reflection on the events of the day to detect God’s presence and discern his direction.
The method presented is adapted from a technique described by Ignatius Loyola in his Spiritual Exercises. St. Ignatius thought that the Examen was a gift that came directly from God, and that God wanted it to be shared as widely as possible. One of the few rules of prayer that Ignatius made for the Jesuit order was the requirement that Jesuits practice the Examen twice daily—at noon and at the end of the day. It’s a habit that Jesuits, and many other Christians, practice to this day.
A good choice for beginners and anyone interested in deepening their prayer life. Commitment of time: 4 weeks
Everyday Discernment Gain an understanding of how to invite and listen for God in your everyday decisions, while applying Ignatius’ rules of discernment to case studies and personal experiences.
Ignatian discernment is the spiritual practice of bringing God into our decision-making process. By noticing the movements within our heart and soul, identifying the thoughts, desires and emotions that motivate us, we learn to discern where God is leading us.
This exploration of the Ignatian approach to decision making uses What’s Your Decision, by J. Michael Sparough, Jim Manney, and Tim Hipskind.
